Climbing an Active Volcano – Mount Bromo in Indonesia

An active volcano is a rather rare thing to see: very few people visit or live around areas which have active volcanoes. However, this dream can come true by climbing Mount Bromo. Found in East Indonesia, it is a small mountain towering 2,329 meters, or 7,641 feet, above sea level. It may not be the highest mountain in Indonesia, but it is quite popular with trekkers, tourists, and climbers. People love Mount Bromo for various reasons, but the view it offers at the summit and the active volcanoes is the reason why it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Indonesia.

This mountain is found within a national park by the name Bromo Tengger Semeru. One interesting sight to see in this mountain are the workers who collect sulfur from inside the caldera. They then sell the solid sulfur to manufacturers, or later turn it into moulds of crabs, other objects, and caricatures to sell to tourists.

The common route used to visit Mount Bromo is through the mountain village Cemoro Lawang. Once you arrive there, it is a forty-five-minute walk up to the volcano. There are also organized by the locals jeep tours. The car will take you to the volcano, and then to the viewpoint known as Mount Penaniakam. However, to those who desire to enjoy the view, the viewpoint can be reached on foot after walking for about two hours.

The local Disaster Management Organization depending on the level of volcanic activity can issue warnings against climbing Mount Bromo. It is, therefore, prudent for one to check out on the office while they are organizing for this climb and ensure that they can get a permit.
